Door Handle Replacement It's worth it to replace door handles if you don't like the way they look or if they are difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is easy if you have patience. Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws, giving them a more attractive appearance. If your new handle does not have screws already connected, you'll have to attach them separately. Remove the old handle Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're also vital for safety since they let you lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes the door handle could lose its grip, become loose, or appear old and worn out. This is a sign that it's time to replace your door handle. If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a problem because it means that you are unable to not lock or unlock your door, which could create the risk of security for you and your family. It is also a good idea to replace your door handle when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is risky, particularly for elderly or children members who might struggle to open it. If your current latch plate has rectangular, swap it over to the round one so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to operate. The first step is to unscrew the screw that holds the latch plate in place. The screws are typically tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have a second person assist you with this task. The latch plate should come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move, use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate. Now you can move on to creating the new door strike plate for installation. Attach the latch plate to the doorjamb using the wood screws that came with the new handles. Don't over tighten your screws because this could cause damage to the strike plate. If you're not sure if the latch plate is in the right position, try closing and then opening the door to see if it closes and latches correctly. If not you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or even forward or back, until the door closes and latches properly. If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too shallow, the wrong size latch, or damaged strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate. Remove the Latch The latch is the metal piece that is angled that slides between the hole on the inside edge of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door wobbles when you close, an upgrade to the latch could be all that is needed to correct the issue. It's difficult to identify the screws that hold the latch to the door, but there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that lets you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and pry it off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle in position. If the latch doesn't easily be released it is suggested to use the clip of a paper or tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the latch's slot that is recessed and gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch start to split. It is possible to repeat this procedure several times before you can remove the latch. You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is positioned correctly in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to attach it to the strike plate and door frame. Take note of the backset (the distance between the center of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement. If you're replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll require an entirely new one. If you're not changing locks the new latch should fit in your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Removing the Cover Plate You can replace your door handles with a modern rose and lever designs to improve the look of your house. To replace the door handle inside, remove the cover plate (or rose) that protects the screws and the inner mechanism. Use a flathead for removing the cover plate. It could have an opening on one edge or be held in place by a pin. Remove the screw holding the interior handle and place it aside when the cover plate has been removed. Remove the screws that secure both the inner and outer plates. You can loosen them using the help of a Philips Screwdriver. Then, you can remove the outer plates and latch plate from the door and put them aside. Most doors have a gap between the door jamb and the edge of the frame that makes room for a handle, but not all do. If yours does not, you'll need to drill a hole into the door for the new handle. The process for doing this is the same as opening a door using a lock, but you'll be taking extra care not to damage the door or frame. Installing new screws for the door knob is required after the holes have been made. Choose the same dimensions as your old screws to prevent getting a handle too tight or loose.
